Why diesel outboards are rare

Diesel engines are inherently heavier than petrol equivalents for the same power output, due to the stronger construction needed for compression ignition. On a transom-mounted engine, that extra weight is a real handling and safety concern in a way it isn't for an inboard diesel bolted to the hull.

Where diesel outboards are actually used

They mostly appear in commercial and military applications where fuel commonality with other diesel equipment matters more than outboard weight — not a typical recreational buying scenario.
