4-stroke engines need periodic oil changes on a similar interval to a car; the water pump impeller (which draws cooling water through the engine) typically needs replacing every 100 hours or annually, since a worn impeller is a common cause of overheating.
Signs you need a service
Harder starting, rough idling, reduced top speed, or visible corrosion around the lower unit are all signs to book a service rather than wait for the annual interval.
